There is a German legend that just as God had finished naming all the plants, one was left unnamed. A tiny voice spoke out, “Forget me not, O Lord!” And God replied that this would be its name.

Your Wonderful Journey Home

Even though each member of our family had taken very different routes and experienced very different hardships along the way, eventually all of us made it to safety. We were finally reunited as a family. What a glorious day that was! I can now recognize a number of such “journeys” I have taken over time. As you joyfully use the map your loving Father has provided for your journey, it will lead you to holy places and you will rise to your supernal potential.

My wife, Harriet, and I love riding our bicycles. It is wonderful to get out and enjoy the beauties of nature. Sometimes in life we become so focused on the finish line that we fail to find joy in the journey. Doesn’t it seem foolish to spoil sweet and joyful experiences because we are constantly anticipating the moment when they will end?

I was 11 years old and living with my family in the attic of a farmhouse near Frankfurt, Germany. We were refugees for the second time in a period of only a few years. I learned that adversity, when confronted with faith, courage, and tenacity, could be overcome.

Dieter F. Uchtdorf was born on 6 November 1940 in Ostrava, Czechoslovakia, to Karl Albert and Hildegard Opelt Uchtdorf. In 1947 his family became members of the church in Zwickau, Germany. In 1952 they fled to Frankfurt am Main, where he received an engineering education. In 1959 he joined the German Air Force and served as a fighter pilot for six years.
Dieter F. Uchtdorf and Harriet Reich were married in 1962. They have two children, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. With his call as an apostle, the Uchtdorfs left their homeland and now live permanently in the United States.
Dieter and Harriet Uchtdorf enjoy outdoor activities, cherish the arts, and are happiest when spending time with their family
Jesus Christ taught many things during His time on earth, the greatest of which was love.
